چکیده

We present a critical review of descriptive complexity approaches to inductive inference. Inductive inference is denned as any process by which a model of the world is formed from observations. The descriptive complexity approach is a formalization of Occam's razor: choose the simplest model consistent with the data. Descriptive complexity as defined by Kolmogorov, Chaitin and Solomonoff is presented as a generalization of Shannon's entropy. We discuss its relationship with randomness and present examples. However, a major result of the theory is negative: descriptive complexity is uncomputable. Rissanen's minimum description length (MDL) principle is presented as a restricted form of the descriptive complexity which avoids the uncomputability problem. We demonstrate the effectiveness of MDL through its application to AR processes. Lastly, we present and discuss LeClerc's application of MDL to the problem of image segmentation. •Acknowledgement: Navy Contract N0014-88-K-0630; AFOSR Grants 88-0244, 88-0296; Army/DAAL 03-89-C-0031PRI; NSF Grants CISE/CDA 88-22719, IRI 89-06770; the Dupont Corporation and Air Force LGFP SSAN 167 46 7002

Inductive Inference by Using Information Compression

Inductive inference is of central importance to all scientific inquiries. Automating the process of inductive inference is the major concern of machine learning researchers. This article proposes inductive inference techniques to address three inductive problems: (1) how to automatically construct a general description, a model, or a theory to describe a sequence of observations or experimental...

Computational Information Gain and Inference

A definition of computational information gain is presented based on Levin descriptional complexity. The measure is applicable to different inference processes, either deductive or inductive, and evaluates the relative value of new inference results.

Inductive Inference, DFAs, and Computational Complexity

This paper surveys recent results concerning the inference of deterministic finite automata (DFAs). The results discussed determine the extent to which DFAs can be feasibly inferred, and highlight a number of interesting approaches in computational learning theory.

Eleusis: Complexity and Interaction in Inductive Inference

This paper analyzes the computational complexity of the inductive inference game Eleusis. Eleusis is a card game in which one player constructs a secret rule which has to be discovered by the other players. We determine the complexity of various decision problems that arise in Eleusis. We show that on the one hand, many of the problems are solvable in polynomial time whereas on the other hand, ...

Transductive Inference for Class-Membership Propagation in Web Ontologies

Abstract. The increasing availability of structured machine-processable knowledge in the context of the Semantic Web, allows for inductive methods to back and complement purely deductive reasoning in tasks where the latter may fall short. This work proposes a new method for similarity-based class-membership prediction in this context. The underlying idea is the propagation of class-membership i...
